Missouri Home Insurance | Avoid Damages to Your Home

Is Your Home Winter Weather Ready?

Missouri Home Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100Losses from snow, ice and freezing temperatures have averaged about $1.2 billion a year, and may be double that amount this year. This article provides useful tips for homeowners to keep in mind during the winter months. Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Damages to Your Home.

Upkeep on the Outside

  • Clean out gutters so melting snow and ice can flow freely. This can prevent ice damming, which is what happens when water is unable to drain through the gutters and instead permeates into the house.
  • Install gutter guards to prevent debris from entering the gutter and interfering with the flow of water.
  • Trim trees and remove dead branches. Ice and snow can sometimes become very heavy and could cause weak trees or branches to break free and damage your home.
  • Repair steps and handrails so that visitors on your property are safe and avoid injury.
  • Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations to prevent cold air and moisture from entering your home.

Keep Your Pipes Warm!

  • Keep the house warm. Set the thermostat no lower than 65 degrees.
  • During super harsh cold weather, turn on faucets so that a trickle of water continues running through the pipes.
  • Check pipes. Look closely for the presence of cracks and leaks, and have them repaired immediately. Pipes in attics and crawl spaces should be protected with insulation.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect the system against increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Add extra insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. If too much heat escapes through the attic, it can cause snow or ice to melt on the roof. Water then can refreeze, leading to more ice build-up—and even ice dams that can damage your roof.
  • Have a back-up power source. In the event of a power outage, continuous power will keep you warm and help to prevent frozen pipes, or a frozen battery operated sump-pump.

Missouri Home Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100

Keep on the Lookout for Water Overflow

  • Flooding related to melting snow can cause sewer systems to overflow; hence causing raw sewage to back up into the drains in your home. Some carriers offer water & sewer backup coverage.  This coverage is not part of the typical homeowners insurance policy, but may be purchased as an endorsement.
  • Sewer backup is NOT covered with flood insurance.Flood Insurance is a separate policy available from theNational Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).  Flood insurance covers floods from tidal surge and overflowing bodies of water.
  • Install a Backwater Prevention Valve. A backwater valve is a fixture installed into a sewer line, and sometimes into a drain line, in the basement of your home or business to prevent sewer backflows.

Maintain Your Fire Place & Wood Stove

Missouri Home Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100Remove combustible items placed near any hart sources. This includes wood stoves and space heaters.

Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Not only do residential fires increase in the winter, but so does carbon monoxide poisoning—so check that your detectors are in working condition on a regular basis.

Have your heating systems serviced. Furnaces, boilers and chimneys should be serviced at least once a year to prevent fire and smoke damage.

So, What’s in Your Policy?

Most homeowners insurance policies have a deductible that the insured is responsible for paying. And if the claim exceeds the policy’s limits, the insured could be responsible for additional costs.  Licensed agents with MJM Insurance of St Louis City will review homeowner policies at no charge. Winter damage could cause insurmountable damage, so it is important to make sure the right coverages are in place.

It’s best to check your policy ahead of time, to make sure you know just what it covers, and what your coverage limits are.

Homeowners May Not Be Completely Protected

Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance Options

Insurance Carriers Offer Different Packages, Which Roadside Package Should You Choose?

Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance Options | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100We all hope that we’ll never need roadside assistance, but life happens! So you’re buying an auto insurance policy and have the option to select roadside assistance. But is it the best for your situation?  Not all insurance companies provide the same Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance options. Each carrier offers their own package and this article explains the pros and cons of roadside assistance options from different carriers.

This article outlines general policy descriptions to help you understand the different types of Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance options. They are not intended to modify any provisions in any contract of insurance.  Example of Roadside Assistance options include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Towing – not all Roadside Assistance plans are open 24/7.
  • Tire Changes – may require that you have the spare tire.
  • Lockouts – open car door or replace the lock for a nominal fee that is not included.
  • Lost-key Replacement – only if the key can be made at the time of service.
  • Fuel Delivery – up to a set number of gallons. A lot of times we see up to 1 gallon of gas.
  • Jump Start Battery Service – free battery test and jump start to get you to the closest garage or your destination.
  • Minor Roadside Repairs – at the site of disablement; e.g.,  loose hose connection, reattach loose parts.
  • Trip Interruption – pays for overnight stay and food if you are stranded while your vehicle is being repaired.

Some plans offer extras:

  • Roadside assistance when you’re on your bicycle.
  • Discounts for drivers who own hybrid cars.
  • Coverage for redoing any repair that fails within six months or 6,000 miles.
  • Reimbursement for services you arrange on your own.
  • Coverage for rental car breakdowns.
  • Coverage for you, your spouse, and children under 21 living at home.

Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance Options | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100Additionally, different carriers offer different pricing tiers.  Some providers offer a yearly membership plan and some carriers have a pay-per-use roadside service option.  Pay-per use roadside assistance is typically billed at a higher rate than an annual plan or option in your auto insurance policy.  Average price for pay-per-use ranges between $59 for non-tow services and $129 for towing service, and some carriers restrict the number of tows per year.

When you are researching Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance options, be sure to ask about the number of miles included in the towing service. Some carriers offer up to 200 miles of towing, while some carriers charge $75 for only 50 miles. Furthermore, some towing companies may tow you to a location of your choosing, while others take you to the closest repair shop.  If your Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance coverage lets you choose your towing destination, find out if you will be charged if you exceed mileage limits.

Generally, tow truck drivers are contracted by the insurance company.  The insurance provider may exclude liability for any damage, injury or loss resulting from the negligence of the independent service facility.  Independent contractors are solely responsible for their actions. Any arrangements made between the towing company and the insured is considered outside of the covered services and are not covered by the insurance company.

There are many restrictions to Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance services. Some of them are noted below; however, each carrier is different. Just be sure to ask your agent what services are restricted in your auto insurance policy.Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance Options | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100

  • Service on taxis, buses, moving trucks, limousines or step.
  • Service to unregistered vehicles that are not legally driveable.
  • Services to vehicles which the service provider has determined to be unsafe.
  • Service to a vehicle which is snowbound.
  • Service on a vehicle to which a plow is attached.
  • Service to an unattended vehicle.
  • Service for a vehicle located at a repair facility.
  • Removal of a vehicle from a closed repair facility.
  • Limited number of tows per disablement.
  • Requests to tow a vehicle from the street to the driveway.
  • Tire service for dual-rear wheel trucks or vans.
  • Towing of utility trailers attached to a covered vehicle.
  • Towing not related to an accident.
  • Delivery of diesel fuel.
  • No coverage for towing as a result of flood or fire.

An example of a particular restriction we found with an insurance carrier is given below:

Trip Interruption expense reimbursement qualifications:  Your vehicle must be involved in an accident in the United States or Canada, 200 miles or more from home, while on a trip planned to include at least 1 overnight stay and, due to the accident, your vehicle must be inoperable for a minimum of eight hours.

When we breakdown or need roadside assistance, we don’t have time to think about the
restrictions… Am I far enough away from home? … Will my vehicle be repaired in less than 8 hours? … How far will the tow truck driver take me?

Consult with our professional agents to determine which package is best for you. Some auto insurers consider calls for roadside assistance to be negatives, just like accident claims. We can help you choose a plan with the most generous towing allowance and trip-interruption benefits.

Earthquake Coverage | Missouri Department of Insurance

NEWS RELEASE: Missouri Department of Insurance Suggests
Homeowners to Review Their Eligibility for Earthquake Coverage

09/24/2015
As Published on Dept. Of Insurance Blog
Contact:  public.govdelivery.com

Missouri Department of Insurance | insurance.mo.gov

Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Insurance is encouraging homeowners to check their insurance policies for earthquake coverage. Only three out of every 10 homes are covered in Missouri. That number drops to two out of every 10 homes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The New Madrid area is the most active earthquake zone in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains. Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover earthquake damage. Separate earthquake coverage, called an “endorsement,” must be purchased.

“Having earthquake coverage is the best way to ensure you and your family, as well as our state, can recover from an earthquake,” said Insurance Director John M. Huff. However, the department’s 2015 Earthquake Report shows that Missouri is experiencing a coverage crisis.

“We have reached a critical juncture where the amount of uninsured property in Missouri will soon eclipse the amount of insured residential property, estimated at $101 billion. This could jeopardize our ability to fully recover from a major earthquake.”

Some homeowners may not buy coverage, expecting the federal government to help rebuild their homes should a major earthquake hit, Huff said. Under FEMA’s Individual Assistance program, the maximum grant award is $32,900, far less than what most homes are worth.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages, What They Mean For You

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages is protection from damage to a vehicle(s) and bodily injury resulting from an auto accident. Insurance can cover a variety of instances depending on the kind of auto insurance policy that has been purchased.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Liability

Liability Coverage protects the other person(s) involved with an accident that is your fault.  Liability coverages include Bodily Injury Per Person, Bodily Injury Per Accident, Property Damage and Uninsured Motorists Coverage.

Let’s say for example, you have 50/100/50.  $50,000 is for Bodily Injury, Per Person.  If you should have an accident and a person was severely injured and incurred $75,000 in medical bills, your insurance will only cover $50,000.  $100,000 covers the Total Bodily Injury Per Accident.  This is used when multiple people are injured in the same accident.  So if you’re involved in an at-fault accident and 5 people are severely injured, your insurance will only pay $100,000 total.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This coverage is for bodily injury at the same minimums as those listed for liability coverage. Using the example above, the Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage would be $50,000. This amount protects you if you’re in a car accident and the other driver is at fault – and that driver has minimum liability limits or doesn’t have car insurance! This coverage also provides insurance for injury-related medical expenses and costs associated with repairing damage to your car.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100“Although purchasing only the minimum State required Bodily Injury Insurance limits can get you a cheaper auto insurance rate, if you cause a serious accident, you are likely to have inadequate coverage due to the price of cheap insurance.  Many vehicles today have a much higher value than the Missouri minimum Property Damage Liability limits of $10,000.  You would be responsible for any amount of property damage over the minimum limits, if that is the coverage you purchased.  Multiple persons with severe injuries can each have damages of hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.  That’s why it is important to buy more than the Missouri minimum Bodily Injury Insurance limits.”

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Comprehensive & Collision

Many people refer to Comprehensive and Collision Insurance as “full coverage”.  The correct term is “comprehensive and collision”.  Comprehensive and collision coverages are optional; however, more often they are typically required as part of a car loan or lease agreement.  Think about it — when you cause an accident, what is your first thought after you see the damage done to your vehicle?  If you have liability coverage only, you could be left to pay for your own damages out of your pocket.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100Comprehensive Insurance Coverages
Comprehensive will help cover costs of damage to your vehicle that result from an event that is not an accident, such as severe weather or fire, theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, animals or fowl, natural disasters, and all glass breakage.

Collision Insurance Coverage

Collision Coverage pays for damages to your vehicle after a collision with another car or object.  There are other additions you can add to your policy and we will review them with you.  Those are Medical payments, Rental car reimbursement, Emergency roadside assistance and more.

Medical Coverage

Medical coverage is an important auto insurance coverage. Also known as Med Pay, medical car insurance covers the costs (up to a limit) for injuries that you, or your passengers may have when riding in and while loading or unloading the vehicle.  You and your family may be covered as a pedestrian also.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is an extended form of MedPay. PIP may cover expenses that are related to injury, but not necessarily medical, such as lost wages, childcare and funeral costs. PIP coverage is currently required by sixteen states. If you are already insured under a good health insurance policy, then fortunately, you may not need to buy more than the minimum required amount of PIP or MedPay insurance–enough to cover your health insurance deductible or other out-or-pocket expenses such as co-pays.

Missouri Auto Insurance – Optional Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100

There are many optional auto insurance coverages, and some may qualify you for additional auto insurance discounts.  These coverages include Glass Breakage Coverage, Emergency Roadside Assistance Protection, Rental Reimbursement Coverage and GAP Insurance coverage.

You can learn more about these coverage types, and additional coverages by visiting our Auto Insurance page, and by reading the Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage pages in your policy.

The Premium

All auto insurance policies involve a premium, which is the payment a customer makes to have auto insurance. Premiums for auto insurance can be extremely divergent and are determined by a number of factors. Gender is the major determinant for auto insurance premiums. Statistically, men are 80% more likely to be involved in an accident, and therefore have a greater need for insurance. Auto insurance premiums for men are typically higher than auto insurance premiums for women. Similarly, teenagers are considered high risk and will have to pay higher auto insurance premiums as well. The auto insurance premium can be reduced if the teenager takes a defensive driving course. Many states require teenagers to take defensive driving courses in order to obtain a driving permit and auto insurance.

The Deductible

It is customary for auto insurance plans to have a deductible that the customer is responsible for before the auto insurance provider offers coverage of expenses. Deductibles can have an effect on the coverage available under an auto insurance plan.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Friendly Reminders

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100You may be asked for proof of insurance at any and all of these times: at vehicle registration, at the time of an accident, and any time when driving the vehicle. It is suggested that the owner of the car keeps proof of insurance in the car at all times, instead of on his or her person, so that it can be available at all times, no matter who is driving.

You should never drive without Missouri auto insurance.  Any violations of state law regarding auto insurance could result in a hefty fine, suspension of your driver’s license, and possibly time in jail. The dire consequences of driving while uninsured are not worth the neglect of paying for insurance. The chance that an uninsured driver will avoid detection is slim; he is likely to be caught and strictly punished–not to mention and increase in the cost of insurance for 3 to 5 years.

How Insurance Works, Premiums and Deductibles

Missouri Auto Insurance Education | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100 MJM Insurance of St. Louis City is not just an insurance agency, we care about our clients’ well-being and take the time to help our clients understand Missouri Auto Insurance and build a long-term, trusting relationship. We provide the tools and resources necessary for consumers to receive the proper Missouri Auto Insurance Education.  Helping you understand your policy is our duty as a Trusted Choice Agent.

As part of our Missouri Auto Insurance Education, we have included the basic information about your auto insurance policy. Our agents offer a free review of your policy to determine if you have the proper coverages, terms, limits, conditions, and exclusions.

The Missouri Auto Insurance Policy

An insurance policy is a contract between a policy holder and an insurance company.  All policies are unilateral in that the policy holder pays the insurance company a premium. The purpose of an auto insurance policy is to make one whole, or return the policy holder back to their original condition prior to a covered financial loss.  For example: you own a 2015 vehicle with actual cash value of $20,000 and the car was totaled by a covered peril.  The recovery amount is limited to the amount of the actual loss incurred, and not the actual cash value – or replacement cost less depreciation.

Auto Insurance Laws in Missouri

Missouri law requires motorists to have auto insurance.  No owner of a motor vehicle registered in Missouri may operate, register, or maintain registration of a motor vehicle, or permit another person to operate the vehicle, unless the owner maintains the required liability coverage.

* Proof of insurance must be carried in the insured motor vehicle at all times. *

Missouri law requires all drivers to carry at least state minimum – in the amount of $25,000 because of bodily injury to or death of 1 person in any 1 accident and, subject to the limit for 1 person, $50,000 because of bodily injury to or death of 2 or more persons in any 1 accident, and $10,000 because of injury to or destruction of property of others in any 1 accident.

Auto Insurance Policy

There are 6 parts to your auto insurance policy and our professional agents can help you determine the best coverages you need for your situation with a price that meets your budget.  We have access to multiple carriers – so let us shop your insurance for you!  Consider this: if you have 2 teenage drivers on your policy and own a $500,000 home – our agents would recommend enough coverage for a loss up to $500,000 so that your mortgage is covered in case of loss.

Liability Insurance protects you, the insured/policy holder, against a claim made by another party, and covers the insured’s legal responsibility to body and property damage.Missouri Auto Insurance Education | MJM Insurance of St Louis City | (314) 645-2100

  • Bodily injury liability (BI) insurance covers you if you cause an accident in which someone else is injured. Your policy is designed to pay claims for each person injured in an accident, and limits the total paid per occurrence.
  • Property damage liability (PD) insurance covers you when you damage someone else’s property. For example, your property damage will pay out when you are at fault for an accident that causes damage to someone else’s car.
  • Collision insurance pays for damage to your car if you run into another object. This coverage is not required by law, although your bank may require it if you have a lien on your car. This is commonly known as “full coverage”.
  • Comprehensive insurance covers you in case your car is damaged other than a collision. The covered perils include hail, fire, theft, flood, earthquake, explosion, falling objects, and encounters with wildlife, such as deer. Comprehensive is optional coverage and you may choose your deductible amount.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) insurance covers your expenses when you are hit by a driver who does not carry adequate, if any, auto insurance. Our agents always recommend carrying uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance so that you are not left with a financial loss because of someone else’s negligence to carry auto insurance.
  • Medical insurance coverage (Med Pay/MPC) acts as primary coverage for medical expenses you and your passengers incur if injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless who’s at fault. Med pay can help you pay your bills as soon as they are incurred.

Cost of Missouri Auto Insurance

Insurance premiums are determined by the statistics of a large group of people who share the same risk. Many factors can affect your premium, and they all help determine how likely you are to have an accident. Click here for more information from the Insurance Information Institute.  Some of the factors that will be used to determine the cost of insurance can include your credit score, driving history, motor vehicle report, the type of car you drive, etc.  Insurance companies obtain the ratio of exposure by analyzing industry trends and driver statistics.  For example: if you live in an area where the average age of drivers is 55 years and they have decent driving records; the risk is slim, therefore calculating a lower premium.  It’s not that simple, but you get the idea.

Missouri Auto Insurance Deductibles

A deductible for an auto insurance policy is the amount of money you agree to pay for damages before the insurance company provides payment towards the damage/loss.  Choosing a higher deductible means there is less risk of a payout for the insurance company, and so you may pay smaller premiums.  MJM Insurance of St. Louis City can help you make an informed decision on how to choose your deductible. Everyone’s situation is different and we understand some may be able to afford a larger deductible, others may not.
